Target Value Design

JOIN US IN AN ENGAGING SEMINAR FORMAT FOR THIS LEAN LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

Presented by Hal Macomber of Lean Project Consulting

Throw-it-over-the-wall design performed by specialists and sub-specialists working in isolation from others interacting with the design results in projects that are unaffordable, unconstructable, off-target and late. Rework, repricing, change orders, and de-value engineering are all symptoms of a process that ignores the nature of design and the systems nature of the built environment.

Target-Value Design (TVD) turns the current design practice upside-down.

  • Rather than estimate based on a detailed design, design based on a detailed estimate.
  • Rather than evaluate the constructibility of a design, design for what is constructible.
  • Rather than design alone and then come together for group reviews and decisions, work together to define the issues and produce decisions then design to those decisions.
  • Rather than narrow choices to proceed with design, carry solution sets far into the design process.
  • Rather than work alone in separate rooms, work in pairs or a larger group face-to-face.

TVD offers designers, consultants, and builders an opportunity to engage in the design conversation concurrently with the result of improving the construction of the project and the value of the completed facility to stakeholders.

LCI New England CoP

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The New England Community of Practice of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community in New England. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
